"Old Drum" Memorial, Johnson County Courthouse (Warrensburg, Missouri)

This is the memorial to "Old Drum" on the front lawn of the Johnson County Courthouse.
Old Drum was a foxhound owned by Charles Burden that had been shot and killed by Burden's neighbor, Leonidas Hornsby.
Burden sued for the maximum of $50 in damages in 1869 and was represented in court (held at the 1838 courthouse that is still standing) by George Graham Vest, Missouri Congressman, U. S. Senator, and lawyer.
In his closing argument, Vest ignored testimony and instead gave a now world-famous eulogy to a dog. Only a partial transcript survives but this speech is credited as the origin of the saying that a dog is "Man's best friend."
