Nel linguaggio dei fiori la protea indica diversità, originalità e coraggio. Questo nome, derivato da quello di Proteo, dio greco dalla innumerevoli metamorfosi, le è stato attribuito proprio perché, da quando sboccia a quando fiorisce, cambia completamente fisionomia. Per questo motivo i grandi eventi che portano cambiamenti, come ad esempio il matrimonio, si prestano moltissimo ad essere decorati con la protea.
