We are fortunate to have cormorants, herons and kingfishers living year-round along the local stretch of a small river. During a recent late afternoon walk along it, my spouse spotted this cormorant before I did. Without trying, we have also seen a lot of herons, a few kingfishers. However, this is our first cormorant. All these birds suggest that there are plenty of fish, and that the river is thus pretty healthy. This stretch of river is relatively slow-running and shallow. Both humans and dogs are allowed to wade and paddle around. They were not allowed a few years ago.
