Alsace, France is a wonderful place.*
This is in spite of the fact that currently, in governmental terms,
ALSACE DOES NOT EXIST!

It will exist again in 2021!
Its phoenix-like rebirth is also a great example of how the French are good at protesting and getting their government to change things changed that need changing.

"From 1982 to 2016, Alsace was the smallest administrative région in metropolitan France, consisting of the Bas-Rhin and Haut-Rhin departments. Territorial reform passed by the French legislature in 2014 resulted in the merger of the Alsace administrative region with Champagne-Ardenne and Lorraine to form Grand Est. Due to protests it was decided in 2019 that Bas-Rhin and Haut-Rhin would form the future European Collectivity of Alsace in 2021."

For example, its native language (Alsatian) and cuisine are their own special mixes of things with origins in both France and Germany. Most place names, especially villages and small towns, are German. The official language is French. This interesting milieu exists because historically, at various times, Alsace has been part of France and at other times part of Germany.
