Convolutions

            HAPPY TEXTURE TUESDAYS! 
We all know that cutting through a tree trunk to make lumber reveals the tree's annual growth rings.  Cut a tree trunk straight across, and the rings are roughly circular. Cut instead at an angle, and the circles become elipses. 

But cutting across the former location of a branch (and thus creating a knot)  reveals something else. As shown here, the presence of a branch can result in beautiful, wild local convolutions in the growth rings. 

Tree scientists probably know why the growth rings become convoluted at branch locations as the years pass. My guess is that prevailing winds cause the branch to bend in various ways. This bending exerts local forces in the trunk wood at the base of the branch that affect the direction of growth. Changes in prevailing winds over the years results in changing directions of growth. and thus growth ring convolutions. 

Location: A felled tree, cut where a branch used to be. Woods above the Moostal, Riehen BS Switzerland.
