Social Climber - a photo on Flickriver

Social Climber

The common climbing ivy, Hedera Helix* is certainly a social climber** -- It certainly does climb, and it is obviously striving hard socially in its use of trees to get itself up in the world.

There seem to be mixed opinions about the extent to which the climbing of Hedera Helix harms trees. My casual observation is that when it gets as aggressive as shown here, the tree it is climbing begins to make less and less effort to put out new branches and leaves. Some of the heavily-ivied trees in our local forests are dead.
