2) Serendipity

            (Continuation of the story)

My first trip to Sri Lanka consisted of exploring Colombo and going on a day trip to Kandy in the highlands.  Sadly, I did not take pictures, but partied instead.  (Oh what a great time) 

I returned again while I was living in Thailand, to obtain a new three- month visitor’s visa. This time, I went south to Hikkaduwa, a quaint seaside tiny village recommended to me by a friend in Bangkok. I boarded a public bus for the journey there and returned by the railroad that hugged the east coast of Sri Lanka

I remember walking along the sandy dirt paths of the village that was carved out of a dense tropical forest. I passed by local women carrying brightly colored umbrellas to shield their faces from the unrelenting tropical sun. Their mood was one of calm and being at peace with the world. I wasn’t a stranger to them. They seemed used to strangers.

I remember seeing a vintage sign for cinnamon in the window of an old weather-beaten local market.  I was immediately taken back to my childhood when sprinkling cinnamon from a little spice bottle to my toast was a breakfast treat.
