Nocturnal Heritage Surprise! - a photo on Flickriver

            So I knew that the UP 1983 was leading an eastbound in the area, but I figured that it passed through while I was busy in Lawrence. Sure enough, while heading back into Topeka, I heard the radio start to crackle with something to the extent of "Yeah, this is the UP 1983, we're looking at a red board."

"Oh ,well how 'bout that?" A quick phone call home to explain my sudden change of plans, and I was off to search for the Western Pacific heritage engine, which was not just in the area, but apparently going to be parked somewhere for a while! It sure was convenient that I just happened to have the camera and tripod on hand.

Anyway, I finally tracked down the '83, 5867, and 5715 parked at Menoken on the OWUSJ-01. This is just northwest of Topeka, where the KP joins the Kansas Sub to Marysville. Both of the GE's are relatively recent rebuilds, and the oil train runs from Wildcat, UT on the Utah Rwy., to St. James, LA.
