The Trantor Tractor was a high speed tractor built in Lancashire by Stuart Taylor a research student from Manchester University an idea ahead of its time and overtaken by the JCB Fastrac Range. The name Trantor derives from an amalgam of its developement title Transport Tractor Originally launched at the Royal Agricultural Show, Stoneleigh in 1976 with a 55 bhp engine and a top speed in excess of 40 mph the first models sold in 1978.
Superseded in 1983 with the introduction of the series 2 fitted with a Leyland 96 bhp engine as standard and a reduced top speed to better suit field work and air brakes to allow for the operation of high speed trailers on the highway.
Production ceased through lack of demand in 1987, but in 1991 developement work commenced on developing it for use in the third world. In 1999 the series II Mk. II was unveiled in New Delhi, India and in 2003 a new company HMT Trantor was formed to develop a version for the Indian sub-continent market. There is currently 4 separate engine options in production by HMT
