Golborne, Ashton Road, GBRf 60021 6F67 (09.10 Tuebrook Sdgs - Ashton in Makerfield Hanson) 19/11/24.

            GBRf 60021 moves off after taking the token for the Haydock Branch and descends the pronounced incline either side of Ashton Road bridge with 6F67 the morning Tuebrook - Ashton Hanson loaded stone. The groundman will throw the turnout and radio the driver to reverse down the Hanson Branch walking 100m ahead of the train. 
* This section of track is in the Guiness Book of Records as the steepest Branchline gradient in England @ 1 in 10 where the first four wagons of the consist are. 
Originally the GCR line from Lowton St Mary's to St Helens Central which opening in 1900, the double track formation went straight on here and crossed over the WCML in the distance behind the warehouse. I can remember steam specials to Haydock Park Racecourse in the 1960's and the old drivers really had to know the railway to keep the momentum on the switchback nature of the trackbed! 
In 1968 a chord line was created from Haydock Branch Junction on the WCML to the token exchange boxes located by the fifth wagon and severed the original formation.
