One Plus One Makes Two - a photo on Flickriver

            It was mid-December, the morning of the thirteenth day of that month more specifically. A long yawn was followed by the muffled sound of a fart. Somewhere, out in the nameless, faceless streets of the city, a dog barked. Three sounds and none even remotely close to resembling the god-awful one echoing around in her head since the evening of the eleventh day of that month.

Instinctively, she went to lift her leg but was immediately reminded of the restraints and so, the itch on her foot would have to go away on its own accord and when it damned well pleased. She was thirsty but wouldn’t dare ask for water, in fear of showing the bastards any weakness.

The knock on the door startled her. It was a sick kind of irony that they would extend that courtesy, given the circumstances. “Oh,” she feigns in a high-pitched feminine squeal, completely lacking emotion, “don’t come in. I am giving my husband a…”

”“ﬨἽὧ, ࢻݹᶓ  ﭤꝩࢩڽ.” She is interrupted by the man barging into the room.

She cringed at the sound of his voice; it was gravelly and grating. “Well, good morning Manuel. How are…”

Again, he cuts her off mid-sentence. “ڛỻὧῥ ₼ᴈ  ݲݺئգ  կԉ ԅҔ Ѹ"   He slowly circles the gloomily lit room, eyeing everything suspiciously, reaching over and pulling on the straps, lifting up the curtain surrounding the bed with the barrel of his rifle and shining the light from his cell phone below. 

“Please don’t check the closet. My rescuer is hiding in…”

”ݧᴞ ᶌᶆṍ ꞆꝦ.” He opens the door to the closet then slams it shut. One last look around the room, ”ѸݺꞜ,” then leaving, he slams the door to the room shut. 

“Didn’t your mother ever teach you not to slam doors?” she asks to an empty room. An empty room, alone with her thoughts… and the sound Jonathan expelled that night (trying vainly to fight them off) repeating itself over and over in her mind. She closed her eyes before the first teardrop could escape.
