16mm, like the olden days -[ HSS ]- - a photo on Flickriver

16mm projection earlier this week for a film festival.

“Wait...what?,” you might be thinking. The film-festival community was broadsided by the SARS-COV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic declaration last March, with some cancellations as stay-home orders and widespread closures the rule. Before long, crowd-pleasing festivals were able to move their shows online with a mixture of free and premium content, including keeping the tradition of the all-fest pass and merchandising.

Since a festival I assist in the projection booth for took this fall's edition online, I thought I was going to sit this one out...or not? I received an e-mail from the artistic director, who knows I'm always game for running 16mm and 35mm film, who had a crazy, but appropriate for these times, experimental idea for showing a (public domain) 16mm print onto a office wall, digitizing it, and showing it live on their Twitch channel, along with shots of me threading up the reels. Cutting to the chase, I helped make it happen, using an Eiki EX-300SL for its bright, near-white, xenon-arc light, as well as a USB interface for sound. Except for a few unrelated issues, the screening went well.
