Paddington and Scout Make Oleg and Peter Feel Welcome

PADDY: "Oh Oleg, mijn beste vriend, I am so very happy to have you here. It is so nice to be able to have lovely long chats with you, but the days are flying by much too quickly."

OLEG: "Oh I agree, mijn beste vriend, Paddy! Barely a conversation goes by and it seems like the day has gone with it too."

DADDY: "Hullo Paddy and Oleg!"

PADDY: "Hullo Daddy!"

OLEG: "Hullo... err... Daddy." *Hesitates.* "You don't mind me calling you, Daddy, do you... err... Daddy?"

DADDY: "No Oleg." *Laughs good naturedly.* "I like hearing you call me Daddy. Now, have either of you seen Scout, Rosie or Peter?"

PADDY: "I believe they are playing princesses and knights in the garden, Daddy."

DADDY: "Oh well, would you pl..."

SCOUT: "Here we are Daddy!"

ROSIE: "We have been playing in the garden! It's so nice outside and it's so much fun!"

PETER: "Oh yes! To play with mijn prinses Rosie and mijn beste vriend Scout in the garden is soooo much fun, Mr. Daddy!"

SCOUT: "Did you want us, Daddy?"

DADDY: "I did. Oleg and Peter, as Mummy Marian said that you may stay and spend Christmas with us, we have a tradition in our bear family."

SCOUT: "Do you mean it's time for...?"

DADDY: "Yes, Scout."

PETER: "What is the tradition, Mr. Daddy?"

OLEG: "Yes, please tell us what it is, Daddy."

DADDY: "I'll leave the joy of the explanations to Paddy."

PADDY: "Thank you Daddy. You see Oleg and Peter, when bears stay with us for a little while, we like to make them feel welcome by throwing them a special tea party in their honour."

OLEG: "A tea party, for us, mijn beste vriend Paddy?"

PADDY: "Oh yes, mijn beste vriend Oleg."

SCOUT: "And there are always lots of yummy treats!" *Excted.*

PETER: :That's good, because all this playing of knights and rescuing mijn prinses Rosie from dragons is grumbly tummy making!"

SCOUT, PETER and ROSIE: "Grumbly tummies Daddy! Grumbly tummies!" *Rub tummies vigorously.*

DADDY: "Best you all come along then. I have just set the table.

PADDY, OLEG, SCOUT, PETER and ROSIE: *All follow Daddy to the dining room table.*

OLEG: "Oh my goodness! What a beautiful tea set!"

PETER: "And look! chocolate treats! Pretty chocolate balls wrapped in foil and even some Lindt chocolate bears! Woooow!"

ROSIE: "We want you to feel welcome and feel like part of the family, mijn prins, Peter!"

PADDY: "Yes we do, Peter and Oleg!"

OLEG: "Oh thank you mijn beste vriend! Thank you everybear and thank you Daddy!"

PETER: "Yes, thank you Mr. Daddy!"

DADDY: "You are very welcome, Peter and Oleg. Now, please take a seat and help yourself to some chocolates, whilst I pour the tea."

PETER: "I am going to sit here and mijn prinses Rosie, you can sit one side, and mijn beste vriend Scout. you can sit on the other."

PADDY: "Come sit next to me Oleg, mijn beste vriend."

OLEG: "Oh thank you Paddy! Oh look at the pretty tea set! What a lovely way to spend the afternoon!"

PETER: "Do you know what I think?"

SCOUT and ROSIE: "What Peter?"

PETER: "I think Christmas here is very magical!"

SCOUT: Oh it is, mijn beste vriend! You are going to have the bestest Christmas EVER!"

My bears Paddy and Scout have made very good friends with two bears in Holland called Peter and Oleg (www.flickr.com/photos/40262251@N03/galleries/721577154558...) and their Mummy (www.flickr.com/photos/66094586@N06/) . Peter and Scout are very similar and have become best friends. Peter loves Rosie and Rosie loves Peter, so they have become prince and princess to one another. Paddy and Oleg are very similar too and have become best friends as well.

This beautiful nursery rhyme tea set was made in England by the Shell China Company in the late1930s. It features six cups, saucers and plates as well as a teapot, coffee pot, milk jug, and sugar bowl. Each piece is gilt edged and decorated and feature different nursery rhymes including: "There Was an Old Woman who Lived in a Shoe", "Ding Dong Dell Pussy's in the Well", "Little Tommy Tittlemouse", "Little Jack Horner", "This Little Pig Went to Market", "See Saw Margery Daw" "Pat a Cake Pat a Cake" and "Old King Cole". The set I acquired from the Thames Hospice in London, and it is similar to a 1920s Shell China Company nursery rhyme tea set that I was given as a gift some years ago by a close friend who knows I collect nursery ware and children's tea sets. There are also doll (bear) sized tea spoons which are sterling silver salt spoons, and the spoon in the "Little Tommy Tittlemouse" sugar bowl is an Eighteenth Century sterling silver mustard spoon.

The tin featuring a bear putting out biscuits and milk for Father Christmas comes from Haigh's Fine Chocolates and contains chocolate teddy bears.

My Paddington Bear came to live with me in London when I was two years old (many, many years ago). He was hand made by my Great Aunt and he has a chocolate coloured felt hat, the brim of which had to be pinned up by a safety pin to stop it getting in his eyes. The collar of his mackintosh is made of the same felt. He wears wellington boots made from the same red leather used to make the toggles on his mackintosh.

He has travelled with me across the world and he and I have had many adventures together over the years. He is a very precious member of my small family.

Scout was a gift to Paddy from my friend. He is a Fair Trade Bear hand knitted in Africa. His name comes from the shop my friend found him in: Scout House. He tells me that life was very different where he came from, and Paddy is helping introduce him to many new experiences. Scout catches on quickly, and has proven to be a cheeky, but very lovable member of our closely knit family.

Rosie is Scout's cousin, because like Scout, she is a free trade knitted bear from Africa. She was made in Kenya by one of the Kenana Knitters, Martha Wanjira. She is made from home spun and dyed wool. She was a gift to me from two very dear friends, includng the one who gave Scout to Paddy.
