A Wonderful White Harbinger of Spring

            There are a few things in my neighbourhood which indicate that spring is coming after the long and grey winter: my clivias start to flower, the freesias and daffs in the neighbours’ gardens raise their floral heads and the magnolias transform almost overnight from dead looking twigs to clouds of pink and white blooms.  This magnolia along one of my walks has only just begun to bloom, which is a sign that spring is on its way here in the Southern Hemisphere.

The theme for “Looking Close… on Friday” for the 20th of August is “white and wonderful”.  How perfect it was that the day before I looked up the theme, I had been out on a sunny, if blustery winter’s day here in Melbourne and chanced upon this white magnolia just starting to bloom whilst on my walk.  I think it is a white and wonderful harbinger of the spring that is just around the corner!  It seemed a perfect choice for the theme.  I do hope that you like it as well, and that it makes you smile.

Magnolia is a large genus of over two hundred flowering plant species. It is named after French botanist Pierre Magnol (1638 - 1715). Magnolia is an ancient genus. Appearing before bees did, the flowers are theorized to have evolved to encourage pollination by beetles.
