Queen Anne Autumn - Northcote - a photo on Flickriver

            Autumn in Melbourne is always beautiful, with many wonderful deciduous trees full of colour like the ornamental pear trees that grow in front of this large, fine single storey Queen Anne villa. 

Melbourne had a very good start to summer with not too many burning hot days and lots of rain, which means that the autumn display of leaves at present are simply glorious.

Built around the turn of the Twentieth Century, this villa has been built in the Queen Anne style, which was mostly a residential style inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement in England, but also encompassed some of the more stylised elements of Art Nouveau, which gave it an more decorative look.  The middle-class owners of this villa were determined to appear as though they were able to afford the respectability of brick even if the reality of their situation was different, as this residence is block fronted (meaning it is built of wood, but the wood is cut so as to mimic brick).  The overly tall red brick and terracotta chimneys are typical of Queen Anne architecture, as is the undulating facade where the bay window is. If you look closely, you will see that part of the mansard is created with pressed metal featuring a fish scale pattern. 

Queen Anne style was most popular around the time of Federation.  With complex roofline structures and undulating facades, many Queen Anne houses fell out of fashion at the beginning of the modern era, and were demolished.
