ELEPHANT APPLE / CHALTA #6 (Bangla = চালতা): FLOWER

In 1737 that is what Linnaeus said when he named the genus.

The Elephant Apple (Dillenia indica), indigenous to India, was named after Johann Jacob Dillenius, a German Botanist and Professor of Botany at Oxford.

The english name came from the fact that in its native range it is a very popular fruit with the local wild Elephants. In the Bengali language, spoken primarily in Bangladesh and in the Indian state of West Bengal, the Elephant Apple is called "CHALTA".

The large flowers are about 15–20 cm in diameter, have 5 (five) white petals and numerous yellow stamens.

The flower that can be seen after the removal of few of the outer skins.
