Wentworth Jesus - a photo on Flickriver

Wentworth Jesus

            Last fall, Dona and I found the Eden Parking Lot Jesus. It was an incredible moment. We travel the roads looking for roadside religious artwork. Dona was the first to spot the Eden Jesus. We stopped for me to take some shots while Dona perused the flea market that was going on in the parking lot. Each time we go through Eden, we make sure the Parking Lot Jesus is still standing. We love this piece of religious folk art.

Imagine our surprise when last week a friend, with whom I used to work, posted a photo of the Wentworth Jesus. Wentworth is the county seat of Rockingham County. There isn't much in Wentworth so Dona and I had never explored the area. I got rudimentary directions from Angy on how to find the Wentworth Jesus and we took off on a quest. While we found and photographed some neat things about Wentworth, it was several hours of traveling the roads before we found him. And, of course, it was Dona who saw him out of the corner of her eye.

The Wentworth Jesus can be found at the Wentworth Church of God. He sits atop a hill in front of the church. While not as nice as the Parking Lot Jesus, the Wentworth Jesus has a lot to recommend it.

I am always fearful that my photos of religious folk art will offend someone. The purpose for taking these photos is to preserve and document a segment of the South that is rapidly disappearing. I take these pictures with care to present them as they are. These pieces of artwork mean something to people. In my photos I attempt to honor that pride.
