            A sizeable example of a County Council official handbook; this for Surrey looks at a county that was, even with earlier losses to the London County Council, one of the largest local authorities in the UK and, in terms of rateable value, it was only exceeded by the Counties of London and Middlesex. The county was indeed to lose more territory to London in 1965 when even the then county town of Kingston became part of the new Greater London as can be seen by the map. Given its size, bolstered by the fact that much of the north-east of the county was effectively London suburbia, it was also unusual in that there was only one County Borough council, that of Croydon.

The handbook includes the usual mix of civic information, industrial activities and residential amenities bolstered by adverts for local concerns. Undated it appears to be mid-1950s possibly around 1955.
