Leabhar Seolta Telefóna Éire - Telephone Directory Ireland : October 1941 - front cover

            The official telephone directory for Ireland issued in 1941 by the Department of Posts and Telegraphs in Dublin. The directory, a slightly smaller format than those of the neighbouring UK nevertheless has strong similarities to the older style of GPO directories that would have been issued for prior tot he formation of the irish Free State in 1922. Again, as on UK directories, the covers show tipped on colour advert panels. 

By 1941 Éire was in the throws of "The Emergency" as the Second World War was more often referred to in this neutral state and the impact of the 'war' is less stated in the contents of  the directory than in the UK. There is mention of ARP departments but equally The German government's Legation is still shown. Only on the back cover does the advert for the return of jam and glass jars, a request issued by Lamb's who were well known for the famous Irish jam brand of Fruitfield, hint at undoubted effects wartime had on Éire. 

The front cover is dominated by an advert for the Road Freight Department of the Great Southern Railways of Ireland, the effective State monopoly holding company for the vast majority of railway lines and bus services in Éire and that had been formed in 1925. The main exceptions were the Great Northern Railway, whose lines and services straddled the Border, along with other cross-border operators, and the Dublin United Transport Company. Under the 1944 Transport Act the GSR and DUT would come together as the new CIÉ. It is rather telling that the GSR choses to advertise its Road services not its railways!
