            Pontefract Castle has stood for nearly a thousand years looking out over the Yorkshire landscape. Since it was largely demolished, at the beheast of the townspeople in 1649 during the Civil War, and the remains now stand as an Ancient Monument, testimony to our rich history and architectural heritage.

From the mound and walls it has been possible for the last century to look out over the industrial landscape of the County, including the series of vast electricity generating stations that are so much part of our more recent history. How sad that Historic England cannot seem to find it fit to statutorially preserve at least one set of the iconic cooling towers as a memorial to the 'electrical age' but instead sit as all are steadily de-commissioned and demolished.

In this view Ferrybridge generating station stands already in the course of partial demolition. The site was first selected for a power station by the Yorkshire Electric Power Company in 1917 and construction started on the "A" station in 1926. "B" followed in 1957 and "C" in 1966. Three of the six cooling towers have already gone, the remaining three will vanish during August 2021. A small biomass generating station in still in service here.
