Map of the Electric Railways of London - Underground Map of London - 1919

            Tipped into a guide book is this badly folded but intact Underground Map of London showing the "tube" system as at 1919. The majority of the lines shown were effectively owned by the Underground Electric Railways of London through various subsidiary concerns, the London Electric Railways, for example, combining the three "Yerkes" tubes, the Bakerloo, Piccadilly and Highgate & Hampstead lines. The one that stands out is the Metropolitan Railway that ran not only its own 'line' but the East London, the Hammersmith & City and the "Great Northern and City" lines along with a complex agreement to provide services on the "Inner Circle".

As ever the map shows various now long closed or re-sited stations as well as showing the system on the cusp of massive expansions in the coming decade that would combine the C&SLR with the H&H to create what would in time become known as the Northern line. The most recent extensions shown here are the projection of Bakerloo line services north over the L&NWR's "DC" lines towards Watford via Willesden Junction (New Station). Work was already, effectively, underway to extend the Central London west beyond Wood Lane to Ealing Broadway over GWR lines that had already opened for goods traffic but that would soon, electrified, become available for the CLR.

The cover is interesting in that the roundel - or "bullseye" - logo shows the word "UndergrounD" in the new Johnston typeface introduced for various uses in 1916 - the "UndergrounD" banner on the map itself also uses the typeface although no other text or titling is set in this.
