Walsall - the official handbook of the Corporation, c1927 : sketch map of bus and tramway routes

            From the booklet that formed the 1927 - 28 edition of "Walsall and its manufactures - the official handbook of the Corporation". Like most other UK local authorities the County Borough of Walsall issued a regular edition of an official handbook, this published by one of the main publishing companies involved in the business, E Burrow. It includes a description of the town and tells not only of existing manufacturers but also the opportunities for new investors. 

This sketch map shows the then network of the municipally operated tramways and newer motor bus routes and shows the less common extensive 'out of town' bus routes that Walsall developed and that were maintained well into Passenger Transport Executive days in the 1970s and, indeed, until today. The map dates from c1927 when the first tramway route abandonment, that to Walsall Wood, was on the cards - this took place on 1 April 1928 when motor buses replaced the service. As part of the abandonment process the borough would, in 1931 start operating trolleybuses - a type of vehicle they would become famous for.  The electric trams had been municipally operated in the town since 1903 and final abandonment took place in 1933. It also shows a couple of complimentary services operated by other concerns - Wolverhampton Corporation Transport (with whom they wouuld in time run a joint trolleybus route via Willenhall with) and the "Midland Red" route to Birmingham of the Birmingham & Midland Motor Omnibus Co Ltd.
