London & North Eastern Railway - souvenir presented to the members of the International Hotel Alliance, visit to Great Britain, April 1926 : posters

            A lavishly illustrated book issued to members of the International Hotel Alliance in 1926 this publication by the London & North Eastern Railway describes the network, places served and hotels owned by the company alongside illustrations and poster reproductions many of which are by Fred Taylor. The LNER, formed in 1923, was acknowledged as the most adventurous of the Big Four railways in terms of its publciity and advertising and by 1926 they were getting into their stride.

This copy of the publication suffers from only one flaw - printed by Adams Bros, and Shardlow, of London & Leicester, it is bound backwards so the covers appear upside down. It doesn't detract from the contents! I understand that the rival LMSR also issued a similar publication.

The LNER, like many railways, took their advertisinging seriously to drum up trade especially with regards to torist and holiday traffic. However, the LNER rapidly developed a strong house 'style' as part of their brand and indeed were happy to start to embrace some of the more contemporary movements in graphic design and typography. During the 'twenties they employed, on a regular commission basis, a 'stable' of artists and poster designer and two of their number have works shown on this page. Fred Taylor and Frank Newbould became noted for the strong 'poster' style of strong colour blocks as can be seen here as well as strong draughtsmanship, especially in the case of Taylor. The two 'cathedral' posters show the English attractions of Ely and Norwich. The LNER also operated steamer and ferry services across the North Sea to Continental destinations and they promoted this trade heavily. Here we see Fred Taylor's glorious poster for Antwerp, served by the ex-GER services from harwich, and an atmospheric view of the North German port city of Hamburg reached by the lesser known services from Grimsby.
