            I like a map with distortion and this gem, that manages to cover journeys between Cromer and St. Louis, manages to shrink the Atlantic quite comprehensively! That said, well, such a journey was entirely feasible (and with relatively few 'changes' and is testimony to the incredible transport and travel opportunities that railways and steam ships opened up from the mid-Victorian years onwards. 

The map is from the LSWR timetable maps and is quite clear for the scale. The company, who owned the Docks at Southampton, did handsomely out of serving one of the UK's premier passenger ports (I suspect only Liverpool came close) and it marketed its connecting train services heavily and on both sides of the Atlantic. Many connecting lines are shown - on the UK side it is interesting to see that the company's rivals for western England trade, the GWR, are rather conspicuous by their absence!
