Shell Road Map of Malaya, 1958 - Perak, Penang, Kedah & Perlis.

            A fine "Shell Road Map" of Malaya produced in 1958 for the Shell Company of Singapore by the London based cartographers George Philip & Sons. The double-sided map is rather large and so I have scanned and posted sections. The key reads "Principle Roads" - heavy red edged in black, "Connecting Roads" in a lighter red, "Other Motorable Roads" in a dark green, "Cart Tracks" in light green and finally "Footpaths" in a dashed green. The Malayan Railways are also shown in a solid black line.

The map really shows how at this date, with the Malayan Emergency still on-going, how remote and inhospitable much of the country's interior was with the bulk of roads on the west coastal plain with no connecting east - west routes north of the Raub - Jerantut highway in Pahang.

This section shows the West Coast from the Thailand/Siam border at Perlis, south through Kedah to Penang and Province Wellesley and into Perak/ The major towns include Alor Star, George Town, Butterworth, Taiping, Ipoh and Telek Anson around the great tin producing areas of the Kinta Valley. The lonely dead-end road up to the wonderful Cameron Highalnds peters out at Brinching.
