Zone White Road Paint - advert issued by The Ruberoid Co Ltd., London : : advert in The Municipal & Road Engineers' Standard Catalogue, 1929 - 1932 ; The Standard Catalogue Company ; London ; 1933

            An advert from a c1933 book on road construction and associated civil engineering. It was a busy time for the municipal, county or civil engineer as the increase in motorised road traffic at this time was placing great strain on the UK's road networks and required much int he way of developing techniques for building, maintaining and ensuring the safer use of roads.

Road markings were becoming important, to direct traffic and give warnings to both road users and pedestrians. At the time paint technology was still catching up with the increased wear it was put under and the need for durability and for a while the use of stainless steel 'permanent' road markings was quite the vogue. Just occasionally these days you may see the rare survivor still around but they are now really uncommon. 

This advert is for road paint and as the copy notes it came with numerous 'instructions' so as to stop bleeding and the requirement to potentially repaint every three months! Ruberoid, as the name suggests, were manufacturers of rubber based roofing products founde din Lonodn in 1906 and that diversified into similar 'flexible' products such as this paint. No doubt the compound included some latex formulations and I wonder if it also contained asbestos as Ruberoid, I think, use such materials. I don't know if they were associated with the US company of the same name who certainly had asbestos interests? The trade name still survives although it is now part of a multi-national conglomerate.

The second edition of the vast publication the "Municipal and Road Engineers' Standard Catalogue, 1929 - 1932" contains many hundreds of pages of adverts showing plant, appliances and supplies across a wide range of 'municipal' engineering such as road construction, lighting, refuse disposal, water supplies and sewerage and park equipment.
