The Post Office and you; publicity booklet issued by the General Post Office, London, c1965 - cover by Stuart Rose FSIA

            The Post Office went through phases of being quite contemporary with their publicity and during the 1950s and '60s they commissioned a wide range of designers and artists to produce a wide range of publicity materials, including posters and publications such as this 1965 booklet designed and illustrated by Stuart Rose. Thomas Stuart Rose (1911 - 1993) was in fact highly influential in the GPO as in 1962 he was appointed Typographical Advisor to the Postmaster General (ah, what titles!) and went on to be the Post Office's first Design Director in 1968 following a background in design that included working at the influential Design Research Unit. This cover is very much in the bold style that was often used at the time, remarkably fluid, and showing the main elements of the Post Office's then remarkable influence over British life with responsibility for the mail, Post Offices and telecommunications. The booklet was written by T E Johnson for the GPO's Public Relations Department and printed, very neatly, by C Nicholls & Co Ltd of Manchester.
