A nice impression of one of the IJN's hybrid battleship-carriers, either Ise or Hyuga

            Shown here giving a rather good impression of the layout of the ship after conversion. The flight deck was approx 60m(197feet) long, providing accommodation for 22 dive bombers, and the ships main armament of 12-14" guns was reduced to 8.  However due to the fact that the Japanese aircraft industry was so disrupted and damaged by the time the ships re-entered service, they were obliged to participate in the Battle of Leyte Gulf without any aircraft embarked, and neither ship was actually directly involved in the naval battle, although both suffered light bomb damage during the action. Since they were never tested properly in the intended role, it is difficult to know how  successful they would have been, although i think  that like most hybrids, they would have rather fallen between two stools, being undergunned for the battleship role, having lost a third of her main armament, and incapable of carrying too few planes to be an effective aircraft carrying platform...... however this will always remain one of those tantalising "what if" subjects so favoured of us armchair admirals, with the added benefit of nearly 60 years of hindsight aiding our opinions!!
