DSC_1723_"Opalite" slab - a photo on Flickriver

            Unknown origin:  I am still perplexed by the term "opalite" as the trade name under which this was sold. Generally this term is used for a glass opal simulant.

Mindat.org gives the following definition: "Synthetic opalized glass used in jewelry.
Also used for impure, colored variety of common opal.
Confusing and unnecessary designation, should be avoided."

This, however, does not appear to opal of any sort.  It is far too hard.  Some have suggested that it is "dehydrated opal," (wouldn't that be chalcedony?) which I can see for the white portion, as it has the hardness of say agate or jasper.  Count me among the confused, but at least it's a pretty slab.  Nice, healed brecciation pattern
