A shrub or tree growing 6 to 19 m high. Present in secondary and gallery forests in Nigeria and eastwards to Uganda and south to Tanzania and Angola. 

The flowers, produced in November and December, are very attractive to honeybees. Bees can often be heard in the morning, just as it begins to get light, collecting nectar and pollen.
