Symphonia globulifera L.f. (CLUSIACEAE)

            Kisongi, nsongi (Kikongo), Hog gum tree, hog plum, doctor's gum, Karamanni wax

The tree can grow to 40 m high and is very conspicuous in flower (see close up photos of flowers in Bas-Congo set). The short horizontal branches, at the top of the tree, are crowded along their whole length with numerous flowers looking like red berries clustered at the ends of upright shoots (Keay 1989, Pauwels 1993).

Present in the rain forest from Guinea- Bissau and Sierra Leone to Cameroons and into Tanzania and Angola. Also widely dispersed in south and central tropical America. Prefers swampy or humid conditions (Daeleman & Pauwels 1983)

The wood is good for cabinet making, turning and general carpentry. It can be used as a substitute for mahogany. It resists insect and fungal attack. Locally it is sawn into planks and used for boat making. Used to make household utensils and paddles. Bark contains a yellow resin called Karamanni wax which is strongly adhesive and water resistant (Uphof 1968). An edible caterpillar, Rhypopteryx poecilanthes, feeds on the leaves.
