My first driving job - a photo on Flickriver

            In the Sixties there was only one van to drive and that was a Ford Transit. Also to my liking Geoff Plant at Gnosall had a fine fleet of blue with red wheels well presented mostly Leyland lorries which as a fan suited me just fine. I started on an scruffy green F-Reg petrol van that stank of old straw and whose driver's seat was only fixed on one side so it started to tip over on bends, but I caved the front wing in as I tried to get through too small a gap in Loughborough at the traffic lights and so it went away to get repaired. It didn't do the rear of the unloading Halford's van any damage but as a punishment I got to drive one of the new prized Transits and did some longer BRC runs too. The green Transit NRF 701F had powerful Lockhead brakes but if one side got a good soaking only the other side functioned so even though it came back blue I wasn't too happy!
