ADDITIONAL NOTES.
BR used the basic 22 ton capacity Steel plate wagon to construct a fleet of 206 ballast wagons for the engineers department. The main difference was the fixed steel ends and four dropside doors with an open trellis top. The longer wheelbase was an immediate advantage but the shallow sides were often a source of trouble with ballast spoil settling in transit and spilling out. I think I am correct in saying these were the last vacuum braked engineers wagons constructed new for the BR Engineers department all subsequent vacuum braked vehicles being conversions from older stock. The 'Plaice' was trialed on the Southern Region from new seeing as that region had gone fully fitted in the late 1970's. Only a handful remained in the south as the vast majority ended up in Scotland with another smaller batch in use in the West Midlands and Cheshire areas of the LMR. The ScR Civil Engineers Department soon had their fleet branded with the blue and white logo used on the Scottish RCE wagon fleet as depicted above. Rail privatisation in the mid 1990's spelled the rapid decline of this type although only 15 years old as vacuum brakes were seen as outdated and everything was going over to air.
