The mandrill (Mandrillus sphinx) is a primate of the Cercopithecidae (Old-world monkeys) family. The mandrill is found in the tropical rainforests and occasionally woodlands of southern Cameroon, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, and Congo.
The mandrill is recognized by its olive-colored fur and the colorful face and rump of males, a coloration that grows stronger with sexual maturity; females have duller colours. Males average 25 - 35 kg, females less than half that weigh (11 - 14 kg). Unusually large males can weigh 50 kg. The average male is 81 - 90 cm and the female is 56 - 66 cm, with the tail adding another 5 - 8 cm. 
They can survive up to 31 years in captivity. 
Mandrills are social animals and live in large groups, primarily including females and young and led by a single dominant male. Most adult males are solitary. The mandrill is an omnivore and acquires its food by foraging from the ground, mainly plants, insects and smaller animals. 

De mandril (Mandrillus sphinx) is een aap uit de familie Cercopithecidae die voorkomt in de tropische regenwouden van Zuid-Kameroen, Gabon en Congo-Brazzaville in Centraal-Afrika. 
De mandril lijkt op een aap in oorlogskleuren en is buiten de mensapen de grootste aap ter wereld.
Hij heeft enorme hoektanden ter grootte van de duimen van een mens en leeft gewoonlijk in een groep of harem, geleid door een dominant mannetje. Dit mannetje dat aan het hoofd staat is het meest kleurrijke lid van zijn troep, die voornamelijk uit vrouwtjes bestaat. Hij heeft een kenmerkende blauwe, paarse en rode tekening, een feloranje kin, snorharen aan de zijkant en een blauw tot lichtpaars achterste. De vrouwtjes zijn bescheiden gekleurd. 
Mannetjes zijn gemiddeld 25 à 35 kg, vrouwtjes zijn met 11 à 14 kg minder dan de helft van dat gewicht. Uitzonderlijk grote mannetjes kunnen 50 kg wegen. De gemiddelde man is 81 à 90 cm lang en het vrouwtje is 56 à 66 cm lang. Het staartje is 5 à 8 cm. 
In gevangenschap worden mandrils tot 31 jaar oud.
De mandril is een omnivoor en zoekt  voedsel op de grond; voornamelijk planten, insecten en kleinere dieren. Ondanks zijn woeste verschijning, is de mandril in het wild toch een schuw dier en veel van zijn levensstijl en gedrag blijft voor ons een mysterie.
