Pair of common eiders - a photo on Flickriver

            The Common Eider (Somateria mollissima), too St. Cuthbert's duck or Cuddy's duck, is a large (50–71 cm body length, wingspan 80 - 110 cm) sea-duck that is distributed over the northern coasts of Europe, North America and eastern Siberia. 
It breeds in Arctic and some northern temperate regions, but winters somewhat farther south in temperate zones, when it can form large flocks on coastal waters. 
The common eider can fly at speeds up to 113 km/h.
It is characterized by its bulky shape and large, wedge-shaped bill. The male is unmistakable, with its black and white plumage and green nape. The female is a brown bird, but can still be readily distinguished from all ducks, except other eider species, on the basis of size and head shape.

De eider of eidereend (Somateria mollissima) is een grote zee-eend uit de familie Anatidae (zwanen, ganzen en eenden).
Een volwassen eider is 50 à 71 cm lang en heeft een vleugelspanwijdte van 80 à 110 cm. De eider is daarmee groter dan de wilde eend. Het mannetje is opvallend zwart-wit gekleurd met een groene vlek op het achterhoofd en een witroze borst. 
Het vrouwtje is bruin met zwarte streping. 
Het is een snelle vlieger die (in horizontale vlucht) 113 km per uur haalt. Roofvogels als de slechtvalk halen hogere snelheden maar doen dat in duikvlucht, dus dat is eigenlijk "vallen". 
Het voedsel bestaat uit zeeplanten, weekdieren, schelpdieren, vissen en andere kleine zeedieren.
De eider komt voor rond de noordelijke kusten van Europa, Noord-Amerika en Oost-Siberië. Het broedgebied in Europa strekt zich uit van arctische streken tot in de gematigde klimaatzone (Scandinavië, Noord-Engeland, Denemarken, IJsland en Oost-Groenland). 
Het aantal broedparen in Nederland is 5.000 à 10.000.
Ze overwinteren deels in het broedgebied, maar ook langs de kusten van Nederland, België, Frankrijk, Zuid-Engeland en Ierland.
