World's largest moth - a photo on Flickriver

            The spectacular Atlas Moth (Attacus atlas) is a large moth found in the tropical and subtropical forests of southeast Asia (area between southern China, India, Malay archipelago and Indonesia). 
A moth is closely related to the butterfly. The Atlas Moth is also known as the Snake-Head Moth because the tips of its wings are shaped and marked to imitate a real snake's head, complete with eye, to scare off predators. 
There are over 20 subspecies that differ slightly from each other. 
The Atlas Moth has a wingspan of 25-30 cm and the largest wings of all moths covering about 400 cm². 
The female Atlas Moth is 25% larger than the male and also heavier. 
The body is disproportionately small compared to the wings. 
The wings have a similar pattern being reddish-brown with black, white, pink and purple lines and a typical, triangular scale-less window bordered in black. The underside is paler. 
The lifespan of an Atlas Moth is only about 1-2 weeks and throughout the whole of this period they do not eat anything, and indeed, the Atlas Moth does not even have a mouth, so has to depend on its reserves of fat stored up when it was a caterpillar. 
This picture was taken in the tropical butterfly house of the Botanical Garden of the Utrecht University in the Netherlands.

De spectaculaire atlasvlinder (Attacus atlas) is een zeer grote nachtvlinder uit de tropische en subtropische bossen van zuidoost Azië (gebied tussen zuidelijk China, India, Maleisië en Indonesië). 
Er zijn meer dan 20 ondersoorten die licht van elkaar verschillen.
De atlasvlinder heeft een overwegend bruine kleur met lichtere en donkere accenten. De vlinder kan een vleugelspanwijdte bereiken van 25 à 30 cm en behoort hiermee tot de grootste vlinders ter wereld. Wat betreft vleugeloppervlak (tot circa 400 cm²) is de atlasvlinder zelfs de grootst bekende soort. 
De vrouwelijke atlasvlinder is iets groter (circa 25%) dan het mannetje en ook zwaarder. 
Opvallend is het slangenkopmotief aan de uiteinden van de vleugels, compleet met oog om roofdieren en vogels af te schrikken. In sommige landen wordt de atlasvlinder daarom ook wel “snake-head moth” (=slangenkopvlinder) genoemd.
Atlasvlinders worden slechts 1 à 2 weken oud. Na het ontpoppen eten ze niets meer, ze hebben geen mond, en houden ze zich alleen bezig met de voortplanting; daarna gaan ze dood. Eerst de mannetjes, daarna de vrouwtjes die eerst nog eitjes moeten leggen.
