Bengalese finch, too society finch - a photo on Flickriver

            The society finch (Lonchura domestica), also known as the Bengalese finch and Japanese movchen, is one of the few species of domesticated finch. It doesn't live in the wild and it is mostly accepted that these species of finches were first bred three hundred years ago by the Chinese and Japanese. 
The social and friendly birds are similar in size, with stubby bills, stocky bodies and long tails. Most are 10–12 cm in length.
They have three basic color varieties: chocolate and white, fawn and white, and pure white. Tri-coloreds, crested forms, and solid colors are also seen. No two society finches are alike!

De Japanse meeuw (Lonchura domestica)  komt niet in de natuur voor. De vogel is drie eeuwen geleden door Japanse en Chinese vogelkwekers gekweekt uit Chinese voorouders, waarschijnlijk uit meerdere soorten uit het Lonchura-geslacht, waaronder het spitsstaartbronzemannetjes (Lonchura striata). 
Het is een sociale, vriendelijke en rustige vogel die in veel kleurmutaties voorkomt. Het leeft graag in kleine groepen in een volière of ruime (broed)kooi, bijvoorbeeld samen met kanaries.
De grootte bedraagt 10 à 12 cm. 
In het Japans heten deze vogels 'Jushimatsu', dat 'tien zusters' betekent en waarschijnlijk duidt op hun goede vruchtbaarheid.
Deze opname is gemaakt in de tropische vlindertuin Klein Costa Rica in Someren (Noord-Brabant, oostelijk van Eindhoven).
