Old World Swallowtail - a photo on Flickriver

The Old World Swallowtail or Common Yellow Swallowtail (Papilio machaon) is a butterfly of the family Papilionidae (the Swallowtails). The imago typically has yellow wings with black vein markings, and a wingspan of 60 - 90 mm. The hind wings of both sexes have a pair of protruding tails which give the butterfly its common name from the resemblance to the birds of the same name. Just below each tail is a red eye spot and six blue spots. The underside is somewhat paler in colour. This species of butterfly, Papilio machaon, is found primarily in Europe and Asia, but also in parts of North America and northern Africa.
This picture was taken in the butterfly garden of De Passiflorahoeve in Harskamp, the Netherlands.

De koninginnenpage (Papilio machaon) is een vlinder uit de familie van de pages (Papilionidae).
De koninginnenpage is een wat bekendere soort in vergelijking met andere pages vanwege de relatief grote spanwijdte van 60 à 90 mm en de overwegend gele kleuren. De vleugels hebben daarnaast een opvallende zwart-gele tekening met blauwe accenten, een rode vlek aan de achtervleugel en een langwerpig, zwart gekleurd vleugelaanhangsel dat de zwaluw- of vogelstaart wordt genoemd.
De koninginnenpage heeft een zeer groot verspreidingsgebied dat vrijwel geheel Europa omvat, maar ook grote delen van Azië en het uiterst noordoostelijke deel van Afrika. Daarnaast is de soort ook algemeen in grote delen van Noord-Amerika.
De soort is één van de grootste en meest aansprekende vlinders die in Nederland en België wordt aangetroffen, maar is hier niet algemeen. In het grootste deel van westelijk en noordelijk Europa is het een zeldzame zwervende soort. Het aantal koninginnenpages neemt hier door de warmere zomers overigens wel toe.
Deze foto is gemaakt in de Europese vlinderkas van zorgboerderij De Passiflorahoeve (www.passiflorahoeve.nl) bij Harskamp op de Veluwe tussen Ede en Apeldoorn. Bij de Passiflorahoeve met 5 vlindertuinen worden inlandse vlinders niet ingekocht, men kweekt de vlinders zelf. Ook de hier afgebeelde koninginnenpage. Alleen in de maanden juni t/m september is de Passiflorahoeve van maandag t/m zaterdag van 10:00 tot 16:00 uur geopend voor bezoekers.

De Passiflorahoeve is onlangs door het wereldwijd opererende samenwerkingsverband van vlindertuinen, the International Association of Butterfly Exhibitors and Suppliers (I.A.B.E.S.) uitgeroepen tot de meest complete vlinderuin van de wereld. I.A.B.E.S., waar bijna alle Nederlandse vlindertuinen bij zijn aangesloten, heeft als doel de promotie en bescherming van vlinders wereldwijd.
