THE END OF THE ROAD. Тhe Past Revisited – Unrecognizable (V)

            ► █░▓    THERE I AM, 41 years after... The super car brings me to a place where I have spent a significant period of my life. With years passing by it has only gained in the importance. But the tragedy of the old age is that there is a shrinking number of people with which you can share the experience. What use is it talking to people of other ages and cultures, describing what it was to you, when the words can't paint something that's gone, long ago? Bring back the scents and tastes? Had I at least a camera back then... with today's awareness of how dramatic the time can change both the environment and the people!

But I have it now. And what I can record right now seems less fascinating but becomes very soon history as well. The question is only, shall we be able to preserve the digital material, and how? More importantly, shall we be able to create a descriptive context around it in order to power up and enable its full meaning?

I had left Šibenik not to return for what is now almost half a century, I realize. My host has put aside a few hours for this visit of Ražine, Mandalina and Vrnaža bay. I expected an emotional moment, but not such one. A shocking alteration! Everything is changed to a devastating degree; devastating for my memory, but beneficial in the perception of the locals. However, some traces left and found by me are there. Still quietly alive. People can destroy a lot if they want, de erosive works of time help too, but not everything can be put away. What I found on the spot is indisputable evidence that I have not lived a fantasy, but a real life. The newly constructed objects look to me as raw violence, annihilating and disrespectful of the essence of the original environment; but the traces that survived are stubborn telltale marks. 

They are scattered all over the place. I may be subjective – and thank God I am! – but the history that is written by life onto inner me, my carved experience, are uncorrupted, they're right ones. Stepping aside 10 years after has helped me preserve the purity of the conditions now elusive history. Šibenik had been my own choice in those times, my free will; I was never sorry for it in spite of a few difficult moments. To the current distortion lovers and revisionism devotees, I shout: You can manipulate the present, you can affect the future, but you can't change the past. And the past will find its way in the final outcome.

◄֍►Technically, Šibenik does not belong to Bukovica. It's one of the three major Dalmatian cities on the Adriatic coast and Bukovica is its hinterland. But I have included it into my album with the same name because of the character of my stay based there. This time I was anchored on the dry land, in the back country where the changes of environment have taken less effect. Except for the human side of it. 

The cameraphone capture edited in Snapseed app. I have subdued the highlights to create impression of a time laps blending of two frames only, merging: the high-key present and my low-key memory of the grey past. Ideally, I would not have yahts and campervan in the frame but there was no way around it.

As long as the editor-in-chief Iurii Konstantinov has not seen this, I reserve my right to alterations of the contents without further notice... 😉
