► █░▓    BIKE AGAINST THE MAN? — This old town's stuffy alley likely doesn’t welcome kids with parents. Remains to be found out why. Unreasonably speeding bike riders are a common thing almost everywhere in Holland. Especially in cities and in the open terrain, particularly on designated lanes where maniacs unleash all their energy and act as if they are alone there and you for some reason stand in the way (even if you are on a bike too). Students, sport fanatics, train catchers, pizza deliverers, you name it. They will speed with rage and manoeuvre dangerously close to your body. Riding a bike is not a risk-free operation in this country. Against the rest of the traffic they behave as if they are endangered, protected species, which they in a way are. Endangering and protected.  So they consider themselves entitled to endanger everybody else. Zebra crossing means nothing to the ruling king of Dutch roads, his majesty The Bike Rider. A pedestrian is a lower-order being, and cars are the interfering objects of silent hate (“I know that he knows that I know [who is the boss here]”…) In practice, no rules are applicable to bike riders, in cases of accidents the other party always gets the blame.
