Shopton from the 35th St. Bridge (2 of 2)

            Back in Fort Madison today to meet The Chief and pick up my son from his Los Angeles trip.  I was hoping the train would be pretty late so I would have more of an opportunity to do some shooting there, but no such luck, only 50 minutes.  Since I got stuck again on the swingspan bridge while some barges went through (I know!  What are the chances of that happening two weekends in a row) there wasn't much time left to shoot.  

I did have a chance to check out the old 35th Street Bridge that goes over the end of the BNSF yard at Shopton.  Had never been up there before, but I'll definitely go back.  It's spooky cool.  Loved the view, although I wish the searchlights were back.  

It's pretty sobering and sad when you know all that used to be in the big Santa Fe complex here and see what little is left these days. There was a 48 stall roundhouse, car shops that employed nearly 400 workers in three shifts during WWII, the "back shop" where locomotives were built, a planing mill where lumber was cut for building and repairing wooden rolling stock, a wheelhouse, an ice house, coaling tower and sandhouse, a water treatment plant and reservoir, a fuel oil storage tank, plus, of course, the Division offices and buildings for different groups of employees with lunch counters, lounges, library, pool room and sleeping rooms. Must have been such a bustling place, wish I'd been around to see it.     

Lots of colorful stacks in the yard today.  I had time to shoot only one westbound here and look what I got . . . UP!  (sigh) They're everywhere!
