Richiamando le grotte marine - Recalling the sea caves

            Il Palazzo Borromeo (XVII sec.) sull'Isola Bella (Lago Maggiore) presenta al piano inferiore sei grotte artificiali, con pareti decorate con ciottoli, conchiglie e piccoli sassi disposti a formare disegni che richiamano l'ambiente marino. Sono collegate direttamente con i giardini esterni e vennero concepite come luogo in cui rifugiarsi dalla calura estiva.

The 17th-century Borromeo Palace on Isola Bella (Lake Maggiore, Italy) features six artificial grottoes on the lower level, with walls decorated with pebbles, shells, and small stones arranged in patterns reminiscent of the marine environment. They are directly connected to the outdoor gardens and were conceived as a place to escape the summer heat.
