Rocca di Angera - Angera's Fortress - a photo on Flickriver

            La Rocca Borromeo di Angera è una costruzione fortificata situata nel comune di Angera (Varese). 
Si erge su di uno sperone di roccia calcarea da cui domina tutta la parte meridionale del lago Maggiore: ebbe quindi in passato una notevole importanza per il controllo strategico dei traffici lungo il lago.
La Rocca risale al XIII sec. e fu originariamente proprietà della casata dei Visconti, ma nel 1449 fu acquistata dai Borromeo, cui ancor oggi appartiene.

The Borromeo Fortress of Angera is a fortress located in the village of Angera (Maggiore Lake, Northern Italy).
It lies on a calcareous stone hill, from which it dominates all the southern part of Maggiore Lake: this is the reason why in the past the fortress had so great importance for the strategic control of the tradings along the lake.
The fortress dates back to the XIII cent.; in the beginning it belonged to the Visconti family, but in the 1449 Borromeo family bought it and they are again the owners.
