hedge-nettles of South Carolina - a photo on Flickriver

            This was a surprise! It is clearly closest to Stachys hyssopifolia. Many dozens of stems matted together, emerging from water, with very smooth, nearly hairless stems, and wonderul, red/green calyces, featuring stiffish hairs on the upper half, which arise from complexes of epidermal cells, very anthocycanic, and when fresh, glowing like rubies if you look at it with a hand lens in the right light. Beautiful!
