Chojubai White 3 5-23-21 - a photo on Flickriver

            The Chojubai is now fully leafed out. 

I made some changes in my thinking over the winter about how to transition my deciduous bonsai from winter storage to the sun of spring. In the past, no matter how I did it, all my deciduous trees got leaf burn. Some were burned to such an extreme that they replaced all the old leaves.

In the past, I used 30% shade cloth, and then 40%. The results were pretty much the same. Leaf burn city.

Now, I’m using 50% shade cloth, and I’m moving the trees into my shade structure much more quickly than in the past. It has made a huge difference in the appearance of the trees, and their general health.

With this particular tree, the Chojubai has had the time and energy to put out some flowers, instead of frantically trying to replace burned up leaves. There are going to be more flowers than it looks like. Looking carefully, you’ll see many buds in the interior of the tree.
