contorted white flowering quince 8-14-20

            Something awful happened to this contorted white flowering quince this spring. Over half of it died.

I think I know what happened, but maybe not.

I first noticed portions of the bark around the base of the tree flaking off. The quince actually looked like it had exploded. Then everything on the cascading arm withered. 

We had been experiencing  temperature fluctuations but nothing that went into the realm of freezing. Except…

The temperatures had been in the 40 to 60 range, but then this extremely cold wind came out of the south. The temperatures had stayed in the 40 to 60 degree range, but this wind was so cold, I thought maybe that had done it. I could find no signs of insect damage, or insects themselves.

Of course, flowering quince will shed branches for no obvious reason. Maybe the tree just tired of cascading and wanted to grow another way. The apex and several other branches are all new, so it is still growing.

For now, this flowering quince will be a combination of growing wood and deadwood, and then in the winter, the flowers will come. Or, so I hope.
