Das sei die Voraussetzung für die Entwicklung von ZERO gewesen, „denn wir wollten ja neue Entdeckungen machen – und dazu gehörte das Licht“, so Mack. „Das Licht war nicht nur einfach eine Voraussetzung für die Kunst, sondern wir hatten auf einmal die Idee, dass selbst das Medium Licht gestaltbar ist, so wie man auch Holz, Eisen, Marmor oder andere Materialien gestaltet“.

Mack reiste in den 60er-Jahren in die Sahara und in den 70ern in die Arktis, wo er seine Arbeiten der Kraft des Lichts aussetzte. Diese bestanden aus Sandreliefs, Kuben, Spiegeln, Flügelreliefs, Segeln, Fahnen und monumentalen Lichtstelen einerseits und schwimmenden Plexiglaskörpern, Lichtblumen, prismatischen Pyramiden, Eiskristallen und Feuerflößen andererseits.
