Eurypterid lacustra Silurian - a photo on Flickriver

When these bad boys roamed the lakes and seas they were the top of the line predators. Armored fishes had only recently come to the scene. Related to spiders and horseshoe crabs, these animals may have been able to e...merge from the water and walk on land, making them among the largest land creatures at the time.

These critters lived in a shallow inland fresh-to-brackish sea located in proto-North America. It is likely that much of the fresh water that dumped into the sea was from a massive river running northward called the Teays River. Half a billion years later, part of the Teays River would be known as the "New River".

Specimen collected by Mike Malaska during the North Carolnia Fossil Club trip to upstate New York/Ontario. The image shows an almost complete head shield containing both eyes.
