GSA field trip day 1 - learning the loess story

Field guide Mark Sweeney explains to our group the story of the deposits exposed in the road cut in front of us. 

The megaflood deposits were picked up by wind and blown to the NE away from the source region. They were deposited in thick loess layers across the Palouse Hills. 

Here we are looking at the upwind section of the Palouse loess. This is a a place where the loess was deposited over slackwater deposits near Eureka Flats. The original slackwater deposits themselves were blown away by winds to form loess deposits further downwind. A story of slackwater flood deposits, deflation from wind, then redeposition of loess/dust (probably after vegetation had taken hold here).
