Temperature - altitude plot from flight UA1861 EWR-->LAX

            This is a plot made by collecting the data from the map view of the in-flight entertainment screen of a passenger jet. I jotted down time, altitude, and outside temperature and graphed the data. 

The aircraft took off from Newark, NJ (EWR) at 1 PM local time on March 2, 2016 and landed at LAX in Los Angeles, CA at about 3:40 PM local time. During the climb up from Newark, several locations where the temperature did not drop as fast as expected could be seen.  (A typical rate is 10 K per km). At 9 km a full inversion could be seen.  A frontal system had passed through early that morning, so it is possible that the tropopause dipped down behind the system, and the reversal in temperature is the result of that front. 

A more typical plot of temperature vs. altitude can  be seen as the aircraft descended to LAX. An inversion at 700 m could be due to a marine layer, or due to the proximity of the ocean (thus spatial) as the plane came into LAX.

This is exactly the kind of stuff that can help pass the time during a transcontinental flight.
